Marcello Spatafora (born
July 30,
1941) is an
Italian diplomat, the current Permanent Representative of
Italy to the
United Nations.
Career
Marcello Spatafora was born in
Innsbruck,
Austria.
After having served in various positions in
Paris,
Belgrade and Beirut, he served as Italian Ambassador to
Malaysia from
1980 to
1986, as Ambassador to
Malta from
1986 to
1989, as Ambassador to
Australia from
1993 to
1997, and as Ambassador to
Albania from
1997 to
1999. In
1989 and
1990 he served as the Chief of the Italian delegation responsible for organizing the country’s presidency of the
European Economic Community.
From
2000 until his appointment as Permanent Representative of Italy to the
United Nations, he worked at the Italian
Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Director General for the Multilateral Economic and Financial Cooperation.
He presented his credentials to the
United Nations Secretary-General on
April 4,
2003. Since that time, he's been a staunch supporter of United Nations activities worldwide, especially humanitarian relief efforts led by
OCHA. He was President of the
Security Council in the month of December 2007.
